Wedding Photography: Selecting a Photographer
by Michelle Davis
Wedding photography is one of the most important roles that will occur at your wedding. It is also the best way you can preserve those wedding memories forever. You want to make sure the photographer will do a great job, so selecting the perfect one is important. If you have to cut down on what you spend in your wedding, this is not the place to slash your costs. You want to make sure that you get the best wedding pictures possible and that your photographer is a professional.
One way you can make sure that you get a great photographer is to talk to your friends and relatives who have been married recently. Many times they will have suggestions and let you in on how their photographer performed. If you are thinking of trying a photographer that you are not familiar with, you may want to check around and see what others have to say about their work. If you hear any horror stories, you would be best to keep on searching.
Style Counts
When you are picking someone to do your wedding photography, you will want to see the pictures that they have taken in the past. Unless you know the photographer well, you might not want to pick someone who is just starting out. By looking at their portfolio of pictures, you can get a sense of their style and the work that they do. Look for special poses that strike your fancy and make sure the photographer’s style blends with yours.
Price is always an issue when you are considering wedding photography. You may want to check with various photographers to see who can offer you the best prices. When you are comparing prices you can also see what the packages offer with the related prices. While some prices may seem a bit higher than others, often it is because the package offers more features like extra pictures or even video of your ceremony. Whoever your choose, make sure that you are getting real value for your money.
Black and White Photos
When deciding on a photographer, you will want to consider what exactly you want at your wedding. Do you want special photos like black and white pictures, or would you like video taken at your wedding. Are there special poses that you want taken or special moments that you want specifically captured.
If you have specific needs for the wedding, you must discuss them with the photographer. For example, do you want to have video footage at your wedding? You will want to hire someone else if the photographer cannot do this for you. Or, you can hire someone else to do the video separately.
Remember that this is your wedding and preserving this day is important. You want a photographer who will capture your day for you and do it on your terms. If the photographer seems overbearing or will not listen to you and what you want, then you need to choose someone else for your wedding photography.

What to Look for in a Portrait Photographer
by Brian Tremblay
I’ve always felt that having a photographic portrait done is like commissioning a painter or sculptor to create a work of art for you. You wouldn’t just hire anyone with a set of paints, stone and chiseling tools to create your sculpture or paint your portrait. You would do careful research and find an artist’s work you admired and loved. You would carefully study the artist to find out about him or her, how they work and what his or her process involves. Once you were happy with knowing the artist’s work you would set up a consultation to discuss what you had in mind. The same goes for when you want to have a photographic portrait created.
You would ask friends and family if they know of any photographic artists. You’d ask what their experience was. You would then visit the photographer and view his work to see if it fits with the vision of what you had in mind.
Some things to look for when viewing a photographer’s work is:
How does her or she use shadow, as well as light, to create a story or drama about the subject matter?
Is the photographer’s training in the general arts other than just photography or self taught?
Does the photographer utilize classical as well as non-traditional posing to increase the artistic value of the portrait?
Does the subject look relaxed?
Does the image cause you to ask questions about the subject like: who is that person, where do they live, and how can I find out more about them?
You should also notice the studio and workspace of the photographer. Is it neat and organized? Are there refreshments available? Does the photographer’s process make the photograph archival giving it the ability to last a lifetime? Does the photographer use a lot of props rather than creative lighting to tell the story of the individual or family in the photograph? Does he or she offer framing of the image?
The best value is not always found in the lowest price. I once heard a story about how Picasso was accosted in a café by a fan of his work. She had asked if he could do quick sketch on a napkin for her. He obliged. Before he handed it back he said, “That’ll be $10,000.”
“But it only took you twenty minutes,” she said.
“No,” replied the maestro. “It took my 30 years.”
When you look for a portrait artist, and keep some of these tips in mind, you’ll soon see the difference between a person who just has a good camera and takes pictures and someone who uses the camera as a painter or sculptor uses their brushes and chisels.
