Backlinks today are what keywords were several years ago. The hottest topic in SEO. Most search engines, and Google in particular, use "link popularity" as one of several criteria to evaluate and rank your website.
Link popularity refers to the number, quality and relevance of inbound hyperlinks (a.k.a. backlinks) from other websites to yours. What do other experts have to say on the subject of backlinks and search engine ranking success?

How to Get More Backlinks
It used to be fairly easy to get quality backlinks to help with search engine rankings. These days, however, it takes a lot more work. This is largely due to all of the "link spam" abuse that has taken place over the years. Today, webmasters are wary of anyone who asks for a link from their site — and rightfully so. I get about a dozen link exchange emails each day, because of the many websites I own. These people are trying to get backlinks in all the wrong ways, if you ask me.
