For SEO purposes, the best backlinks come from well-established websites that are somehow relevant to your own website. With that being said, inbound links in general will increase your link popularity.

I'll go a step further and say that the best backlinks are those that give you direct traffic in addition to search engine boost.
For example, I have some quality inbound links from the Broker Agent News website as a result of sending them articles and having them published. I did not send these articles for link purposes-I sent them to educate my audience and enjoy some direct website traffic. The link from their website to mine is a bonus.
This is an excellent link for me because (A) it comes from an older, well-established website, (B) it comes from a website related to my own, and (C) it provides direct traffic as well as search engine benefit. This is the essence of "quid pro quo" online ... I bring value to Broker Agent News by providing quality articles, and they bring value to me by way of exposure and visibility.
