SEO Optimization - A Simple Explanation

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most popular topics in online marketing. The reasons are obvious — search engines have become the new Yellow Pages, attracting millions of visitors each day.

Thus, SEO optimization is on the mind of just about anyone who owns a website today. But what is SEO, and how can you increase your business through website optimization techniques?

In this article, I will offer a straightforward definition of search engine optimization and explain the various parts of an SEO campaign.

Website Optimization Defined

To be technically accurate, the term SEO optimization is somewhat redundant. The acronym SEO stands for search engine optimization, so the acronym itself includes the optimizing factor. Nevertheless, SEO optimization is a popular and commonly used phrase, so I will stick with it throughout this article.

Regardless of what you call it, here's how I define SEO / website optimization. It is the process of improving a website for better search engine ranking and visibility. That's as simple a definition as I can come up with. It's also entirely accurate. Some people think SEO optimization is a lead-generation tool, but this is incorrect. There is one primary objective of SEO website optimization, and that is to increase your site's ranking in major search engines (for relevant search phrases).

The Many Parts of Optimization

Different people go about SEO optimization in different ways. Regardless, there are certain tried-and-true practices that should be a part of any optimization program. Here, then, are the primary parts of an SEO website optimization program:

  • Key Phrase Research — This whole process should begin with a solid round of keyword research. By this, I mean you should do some research to find out which relevant words and phrases your target audience is searching the most.
  • Content Development / Copywriting — Now that you have a list of key phrases that are related to your business, you're ready to develop your website content around those phrases. Quality content is the fundamental building block of any website optimization program. So invest the time and effort.
  • Link Building — Inbound links are one of the key factors that will determine your rankings in the major search engines. Thus, link building is an essential part of an SEO optimization campaign.
  • Online Publishing — You can obviously benefit from publishing quality content onto your own website. But you can also advance your SEO program by publishing articles onto other websites, and linking back to your own site through the author's note at the end of each article.
  • Monitoring Performance — This is the only way to know how your website optimization efforts are paying off. You must keep tabs on your rankings for certain key phrases, as well as your traffic levels. SEO is like any other form of business or marketing in this regard. You must measure your success in order to learn.

Conclusion
To achieve the best results through your website optimization program, you should take a well-rounded approach to SEO. You should combine all of the techniques mentioned above so that they reinforce one another. In other words, don't put all of your eggs into one basket.
