How Google Panda Affects Your Bottom Line
In February of 2011, Google made a major adjustment to the computerized algorithm it uses to evaluate and rank websites. Here it is in a nutshell: If they feel a certain website has a high percentage of low-quality content, they will demote the entire site within their search listings. In the past, these things were generally handled on a page-by-page basis. But not anymore.
Here's what Google engineer Amit Singhal had to say about it:
"Low-quality content on some parts of a website can impact the whole site's rankings, and thus removing low quality pages, merging or improving the content ... could eventually help the rankings of your higher-quality content." -Amit Singhal, Google fellow and search engineer
It's getting harder to achieve and sustain first-page rankings in Google. Your content must truly engage your audience. If your content fails to deliver in this respect, you'll have higher "bounce rates" and lower rankings. Obviously, that's the last thing you want. This is why we offer SEO training to San Diego companies like yours.
How does all of this relate to your bottom line? Google is the number-one search engine in terms of volume. The Panda update determines how they will evaluate and rank websites going forward. How you respond to this update will determine how much traffic you get from Google, over the coming weeks, months and years. A high-traffic website is a profitable website. A reduction in traffic has the opposite effect -- it reduces your ability to find new customers.

Brandon is one of the most widely published experts in search engine optimization. He has worked in the SEO industry for nearly eight years. He's also a full-time Internet publisher and copywriter. Before relocating to San Diego, he managed an SEO firm in Austin, Texas (hence the name of this website). You can learn more about Brandon's credentials on this page.
Special Focus: Creating Useful Website Content
When Google's engineers talk about the Panda update, they frequently use the word "useful." For example, here's what Amit Singhal said on the official Google blog:
"This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites ... or sites that are just not very useful."
We have read every word of news coverage and discussion pertaining to the Google Panda update. Their employees keep using the same two words when describing the kind of website content they seek to reward. Those words are "useful" and "quality."
In isolation, these words are not very helpful. What is the definition of useful website content? What does "quality" mean, within the context of Google rankings? We have done a lot of research to answer these questions, and we've identified several factors that seem to meet Google's definition of quality content. These factors include the depth of your content and the amount of time people spend reading it, among other things.
This is the value of our San Diego SEO training program. We have the knowledge and experience to help you succeed in the post-Panda world. In addition to being an SEO consultant, Brandon is a full-time Internet publisher. He has carefully monitored the impact of this algorithm change across his network, studying the positive and negative effects on various types of content. He has a unique insight into what makes the new ranking system "tick."
